Topic: Each day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 130 Americans die from drug overdoses on opioids. Jeff Kahrs, the Director of Region 7 of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will provide an update on the national strategy to combat the opioid crisis at our meeting on May 21. The Opioid Crisis Response Act of 2018, sponsored by United States Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, calls on the Department of Health and Human Services to work with other Federal agencies including the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Department of Education and Labor to address the crisis. Khars will provide an update on the situation across the United States and give details on Nebraska.
Speaker Bio: Wm. Jeff Kahrs was appointed Regional Director of Region 7 of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in November 2017. As a presidential appointee, Kahrs provides executive leadership as the primary representative for the Secretary of Health and Human Services. In this role, Kahrs oversees HHS activities in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska, and represents the department in its work with nine federally recognized tribes. Read more about the speaker here.

Michelle is especially grateful to be chosen as a local Rotarian. Michelle states, “At times, we all forget that we are parts of a whole. None of us would be where we are today without energy and strength from others.” For that reason, she enjoys giving back and “Service Above Self” is a moral principle that she holds dear. Michelle is currently the director of sales for The Kindler Hotel, Lincoln’s first independently owned, boutique hotel. She has worked in a communications and sales capacity for many years, holding positions at Nebraska Wesleyan University as public relations director; The Cornhusker Hotel as sales and marketing director; Talent Plus, Inc. as chief of staff and the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce as marketing director.
She is a native Lincolnite, possessing degrees from the University of Nebraska. Michelle is a mother of three children, two sons entering middle school and a daughter who will be a senior at Lincoln Southwest High School. Michelle has a special place in her heart for people possessing special needs, or rather, “superior talents.” Her middle child has Down syndrome.

Recently, Bob Everitt introduced our new member Matt Glawatz. Matt is an Architect and Associate Principal with The Clark Enersen Partners. Matt has been with the firm for the past 19 years, beginning his career as an intern in May 2000. Matt graduated with his Masters of Architecture from the University of Nebraska Lincoln in 2005, and began full-time employment with the firm. Over his career he has developed a specialization in Civic Architecture, particularly Public Libraries. “Libraries as a service and building type have the ability to positively impact the lives of all people, regardless of social or economic status, and serve to improve the vitality of the communities in which they reside.”
Matt grew up in Seward, Nebraska, and is the son of Roger and Sharon Glawatz. Roger is an active Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Seward. Matt and his wife Maggie have been married for 5 years. Maggie is a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner specializing in Geriatrics with Bryan Health. They have a 2-year-old daughter Josephine who is the joy of their world, and two dogs who keep them all on their toes. When they can find spare time, they enjoy camping, traveling, and spending time in their yard. Welcome to Rotary, Matt!
