Welcome Back to Rotary Marcia White
Marcia White is happy to be back in Rotary 14 after several years away. In her previous Rotary incarnation, Marcia was heavily involved in the Auction and the Fellowship Committee. Even though she left Rotary for a while, she always carried the laminated card of the 4-Way Test and The Object of Rotary in her planner, so the ideals of Rotary were never far from her heart.

A native of Bridgeport, Nebraska, Marcia earned a BS in Agriculture and an MA in Adult and Continuing Education from UNL and held positions in government and nonprofit organizations in Lincoln for many years before taking off for the Peace Corps in 2002. After serving in Ghana, West Africa, for two years, Marcia returned to Lincoln briefly before leaving to teach at Webster University in Thailand. She returned to Lincoln in 2007 and held positions at UNL and the Nebraska Community Foundation before taking her current position as Program Manager for the Community Health Endowment of Lincoln. Business Networking Day a Smashing Success
The 2020 Virtual Business Networking Day was indeed a smashing success with a total of 117 participants, surpassing our high record last year of 105. We extend our sincere appreciation to our Business Hosts: Berry Law Firm, EducationQuest, Lincoln Electric Service (LES), Lincoln Community Playhouse, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Sampson Construction, Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA), Lancaster County Engineer, Lincoln Journal Star, Lancaster Event Center. This would not have been possible without our engaged Rotarian liaisons: Margaret Berry, President Eric Drumheller, Randy Bretz, Gail McNair, Bob Everitt, Morrie Enders, Lisa Lee, Liz Koop, and Randy Hawthorne. Special thanks to Committee Chair Extraordinaire Bob Everitt. Below are some photos:

Governor Named Rotary #14 Volunteer Group of the Year
ServeNebraska and Gov. Pete Ricketts have named Downtown Lincoln Rotary Club #14 “Volunteer Group of the Year”. This award is part of the Step Forward Awards which is one of the most prestigious volunteer awards given across Nebraska. Recipients of this award have gone above and beyond the call of service to their community. President Eric spoke stating, “While we are humbled and honored by receiving this award, we know that our work is never done...with a heart for service, our members continue to actively find ways to give back.”

Rotary #14 has completed an estimated 10,000 hours each year in the community in addition to weekly meetings. Celebrating its 110th anniversary, Rotary #14’s involvement spans across K-12 schools, higher education, mentorship, food insecurity, city recreation, highway cleanup, Nebraska-based business recognition, and more. In addition to partnering with local organizations, Rotary #14 provides grant funding to area nonprofits. On a global scale, the club works with Rotary International to eradicate polio and provide clean drinking water.

Awards will be presented at this year’s virtual event on Thursday, Oct. 29. Community members are invited and encouraged to attend this online celebration of the great work being done in the communities we call “home.” For more information, visit serve.nebraska.gov. Rotarian Natalie Hahn as a Sower Awardee
Rotarian Natalie Hanh was awarded the 2020 Sower Award by Humanities Nebraska. Individuals chosen for the award have made “a significant contribution to public understanding of the humanities in Nebraska.” Natalie is the International United Nations official and Malaika Foundation founder. She served 38 years with United Nations programs in Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, New York City, and Rome.

Her work with the U.N. included areas such as new food crops and nutrition in Nigeria, women, and Finance with the International Fund for Agricultural Development, youth initiatives with the Food and Agriculture Organization, UNICEF Representative to Malawi, and Senior Private Sector Advisor at the U.N.’s Fund for International Partnerships. Her favorite job was in Nigeria with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA-Ibadan) where she assisted in introducing improved food crops and nutrition programs for rural women. An agricultural revolution was the adoption of soybeans, a new crop of the country. For this accomplishment, the Yoruba Peoples honored her with a chieftaincy and bestowed the title Balogun Iyalaje, meaning “the person who empowers.”

Over the past 20 years, the Malaika Foundation has organized educational workshops throughout Nebraska for 3,000 teachers and provided 68 fellowships to teachers and students to study abroad on five continents. Dr. Hahn has donated African art to Metropolitan Community College in Omaha; the Kenneth Morrison Cancer Center in Hastings; the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln; Wayne State College, and the public schools and libraries in Lexington.
