The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has a worldwide reach. One country, Rwanda, a relatively small country in central Africa has sent many students here to learn modern-day agricultural practices. During our program on February 12, Tiffany Heng-Moss, Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will share with us the details of this program. The University recruits up to 50 students each year to come to Nebraska and study conservation agriculture, entrepreneurship, leadership, and innovative thinking. The participants return to Rwanda with a commitment to spend a minimum of 5 years of their career advancing the agricultural sector of their country. Read more about Tiffany, here.
Rise.Shine.Give was a Huge Success
On Saturday, February 9, the Rotary 14 Rise.Shine.give event raised an estimated $60,000 for our Foundation. The event is the primary fund-raising effort for the Foundation, raising money for Everett Elementary School, the South of Downtown Art Hub, college scholarships and grants serving Lincoln and beyond. A crowd estimated at 400 enjoyed a brunch provided by Premier Catering, bid on dozens of auction items, purchased tickets for a variety of Epic Experiences and made donations to the Foundation. Our thanks to the committee which spent many months planning this event. The group included: Amy Dickerson, Jim Smith, Mark Stephens – Tri-Chairs, Christina Usher, Erin Dobesh, Gail Illich, Jennifer Brinkman, Jess Rustad, Jim Mastera, Lorie Cook-Benjamin, Mailani Veney, Mike Renken, Mike Wortman, Randal Hawthorne, and Randy Bretz. Tickets for many of the Epic Experiences are still available at bidpal.net/Rotary14. An event video clip can be viewed on our YouTube channel here, or on our Facebook Page here, and more pictures and live videos click/tap here.

Welcome to Rotary #14 Cindi Allen
Cindi Allen, from the Rotary Club of Ogallala, was recently introduced to our club by Allen Beermann. Last month, Cindi relocated to Lincoln to begin her service as the new Assistant Secretary of State of the State of Nebraska. Cindi has been a Rotarian for 20 years in Ogallala where she served as President,  Board member and Interact Chair for 13 years. She is a Paul Harris Fellow. She hosted four Rotary exchange students in her home, and her two daughters participated in Rotary student exchange in Germany and Italy. She also raised funds and took five high school students to India to vaccinate children against polio, and worked with Alliance for Smiles in Bangladesh. Cindi served in the Ogallala School Board where she was a successful fundraiser and has raised $136,000 to renovate the high school lecture hall using various fundraising methods. Cindi is a champion in promoting Nebraska to the nation and the world having served in the Nebraska Ag Leadership Council, Governor's International Trade Council, US Global Leadership Coalition, Agricultural Policy and Advisory Committee (APAC), Washington DC. Please introduce yourself and welcome Cindi to Rotary 14 when you see her.

Welcome Newest Rotarian Andy Joyce
Recently, Bill Michener introduced Andy Joyce to Rotary 14. Andy serves on the LightHouse Board as the Vice President, where he pushed for and helped implement technological changes to operations that helped increase donations each year and last year nearly doubled the success of the previous year. Andy is a Partner at the Marrow Poppe Law Firm. As a Partner of his Law Firm, Andy pushed for and achieved reform for maternity leave policy and several capital improvement campaigns. Please introduce yourself and welcome our newest Rotarian to Rotary 14!

You can Stop Human Trafficking
As Rotarian, you have the power to stop human trafficking through Rotary's Hotel-Motel Project. The Hotel-Motel project seeks to eliminate and prevent sex trafficking by educating those in the hospitality industry to recognize when it is happening and to train them on how to respond. In addition, this educational effort is designed to spur cultural change within the general community and among first responders.  We have a training happening right here in Lincoln on February 23, 2019 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2110 Sheridan Blvd, Lincoln, NE 68502. We need 30 volunteers. Sign up now, click/tap HERE. Questions, please contact Sharon Wherry at sharon.wherry@gmail.com or Dan Wherry at daniel.wherry@gmail.com.

The Hotel-Motel Project is relevant, timely and needed because: (1) There is a high incidence of sex trafficking in hotels-motels; (2) Personnel employed by hotels-motels see first hand what happens within their facility, and, if trained, are able to enhance intervention and prevention; and (3) There is a beginning national trend to criminally and civilly target facilitators of sex trafficking, with common themes including reckless disregard of sex trafficking within the facility, and failure to train facility personnel regarding sex trafficking.
Happy Birthday Rotarians!
